off the wagon

So i've been way behind on blogging these past few weeks- not having a computer makes america, the land of wireless internet endlessly frustrating. The past two weeks have been busy: from Vail for the Teva Mountain Games, to Denver and Aspen for fun, to Lyons, CO for the lyons rivers festival, and then to Salida for FIBArk this weekend. Lots of new friends, reunions with old friends, festivities and kayaking to blog about!

I'll be sure and do proper updates soon- with photos and all, but for now, check out www.whitewater-koa.blogspot.com for updates from Teva, along with www.mikekayak.blogspot.com and www.teampyranha.com . Jeremy Laucks put up a video edit from our Cali trip online, www.chasingrain.com .

UganDOsomething?

I decided to start up this blog in order to keep in touch with people while volunteering at the Soft Power Health Clinic in Uganda from October 2007-April 2008. This blog was designed for family, friends, and anyone who so generously contributed to my trip so that you can all keep tabs on me, and so that i can let you know what i'm doing.

A lot has changed in the year since I started this blog. I am no longer working for Soft Power Health, nor am I in Uganda. However, i still believe in what Soft Power is trying to accomplish, and maintain close ties with my Uganda family. I have decided to keep this blog going to keep family and friends up to date on my exploits, wherever they may take me, whatever they may be. I chose to keep the name the same for simplicity's sake- its not perfect, but then again what is?

Please feel free to pass the address of this blog along to anyone else you think might be interested what I am doing, or about Soft Power Health.

Boda Boda- motorcycle taxi
Matatu- minivan like vehicle that serves as public transportation all through uganda
Mzungu- White Person/Foreigner
NRE- nile river explorers campsite, where i live
Bujagali Falls- Village where i live
Sipi Falls- Area abut 3.5 hours east of Bujagali where Will, Fraggle, and Ian have opened their own lodge, Sipi River Lodge.
Jinja- Closest main town to Bujagali
Kampala- Capital City of Uganda
Lusoga/Luganda- local languages here in Bujagali
Posho- corn meal food staple
Matoke- Plantains
Chapati- egg/omelette wrapped in a tortilla, the ugangdan version of fast food.
Blunt- Aerial freestyle kayak maneuver that involves a vertical transfer of edges while in a front surf, to move to a back surf
Hairy Lemon- Island 45 k downstream of NRE, right below the nile special wave, where people go to stay and kayak
KTN- Kayak the Nile, the kayak school i work for
Ovale, Vivax, Falciprum, Malariae- strains of malaria prevalent here in Uganda
